Adolfo J. Domínguez, « El personal de los espacios cultuales en Grecia, entre la dependencia real y la simbólica », Actes du Groupe de Recherches sur l’Esclavage depuis l’Antiquité, ID : 10670/1.ol0p6e
This paper addresses the problem of the status of personnel performing non priestly tasks in Greek cultic places. Analyzing several examples of real and metaphorical “ sacred servitude”, we see how in most cases their dependency is equated to slavery but, in reality, these are situations in which free individuals, sometimes of high social and economic level, are involved during a fixed period of time in fulfilling subordinate tasks in the places of worship. Despite the use of the same vocabulary, such symbolic situations were not confused with true dependency, which further complicates analysis. Finally, we show how, through consecration to the gods, those performing temporary services on behalf of them end up getting a higher social recognition.
