The Jews and fascismFor a long time, analysis of the relationship between the Italian Jews and the Fascist regime focused on the victim-executioner dichotomy, to such an extent that it was reduced to this antagonism. In the memory of those involved and in the work of historians, the anti-Semitic persecution and the Holocaust acted as a distorting lens through which they viewed the Fascist period. They used this lens to juxtapose different attitudes, reactions and interpretations, which, in the case of the Jews, only developed during the racist turning point in 1938. They also described the Italian Jews as being “naturally” anti-Fascist.Without intending to suggest the complete opposite, this paper underscores the importance of contextualizing the behavior of the Jewish minority under Fascism. It aims to show the ways in which the relationship between the Jewish community and the regime can serve as a basis for evaluating the extent and characteristics of the integration and nationalization processes of the Italian Jews after the new unified Italian state granted them emancipation.
