Nada Zakari et al., « Management of cardiac patients during the month of Ramadan », Sang Thrombose Vaisseaux, ID : 10670/1.orl6dk
The fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the pillars of Islam. Muslims must not drink or eat from dawn to dusk. The physiological effects of Ramadan are influenced by the duration of the fast (which varies depending on the region and the season), sleep quality, and changes in dietary habits. Although data on the impact of fasting on cardiovascular disease is not very extensive, it can be said that most stable cardiac patients can fast if they follow their cardiologist’s advice. However, this is not the case for acute or uncontrolled situations during which fasting can worsen the patient’s condition. The goal of the consultation prior to the beginning of fasting is to stratify the patient’s cardiovascular risk, explain the potential complications of fasting, and adjust their medication.
