From 1815 to the American Civil War, a steady flow of fugitive slaves crossed the border from the United States to Canada to seek refuge “under the lion’s paw.” In 1855 Boston abolitionist Benjamin Drew visited the Black fugitives to record their stories in those communities of Canada West where they had settled. While their testimonies invariably denounce the horror of slavery, they also provide insights into the former slaves’ perception of Canada, highlighting the ambivalent nature of the fugitives’ rapport with their host country, rather than sanctioning the image of Canada as a Promised Land.
