This article on Juli Zeh examines the extend to which the notion of “transnational” can be an adequate interpretive tool for authors who do not have a migrant background. Juli Zeh‘s position in the public sphere and in the literary field, which is largely determined by her identity as a politically committed author and jurist, places her at the center of a transnational dynamic. Several of her fictions and essays are informed by recurring motifs and themes arising from her concerns about the digital revolution, her awareness of supranational dynamics in the wake of the European construction, and her involvement in protecting our Civil Rights which are threatened by the production of mass data and their use in the Global War on Terror. This analysis of a selection of her novels and essays allows us to highlight some characteristics of a German transnationalism.

Anhand verschiedener Essays und Fiktionen von Juli Zeh wird untersucht, inwiefern das Konzept des Transnationalen für eine Autorin, die keinen Migrationshintergrund hat, ein wirksames Interpretationsinstrument sein kann. Aus Juli Zehs Positionierung im öffentlichen Raum und im literarischen Feld, die weitgehend durch ihre Identität als Autorin und Juristin bestimmt wird, ergibt sich eine transnationale Problematik, die mit ihrem politischen Engagement verbunden ist. Sowohl die Fiktionen als auch die Essays sind von wiederkehrenden Motiven und Themen geprägt, die das Konzept des Transnationalen jeweils einschließen: die Auseinandersetzung mit dem digitalen Wandel, das Bewusstsein einer wachsenden supranationalen Dynamik infolge des Aufbaus Europas und schließlich die Verteidigung der durch die Produktion von Massendaten und deren Einsatz im Kampf gegen den globalen Terrorismus gefährdeten Bürgerrechte. Die Analyse einiger ihrer Fiktionen und Essays soll dazu beitragen, die Konturen eines deutschen Transnationalismus aufscheinen zu lassen.
