Ce texte écrit à chaud juste après le décès de David Graeber tente d’expliquer l’importance de son œuvre dans les trois dimensions des affects, des idées et de la science. Sur le plan des affects, la principale qualité de son œuvre était de transmettre avec une imagination et une intelligence rares son enthousiasme joyeux pour la connaissance scientifique et les possibilités politiques quand trop d’auteurs des sciences économiques et sociales restent enfermés dans des passions tristes qui font fuir les lecteurs. Sur le plan des idées, la rigueur profonde de son œuvre tient à son épistémologie influencée par Bhaskar, à sa connaissance de la politique économique acquise grâce à ses amis Hudson et de Keen, à sa maîtrise du corpus anthropologique et, enfin, à sa sensibilité anarchique éloignée de toute chapelle hiérarchique théorique. Sur le plan scientifique, le centre de gravité de son ego et de son œuvre foisonnante d’hypothèses n’a jamais été placé dans telle ou telle théorie ou idéologie mais dans la procédure scientifique elle-même qui consiste à créer et à tester les hypothèses pour explorer la terra incognita de notre monde humain, trop humain.

This text, written in the heat of the moment just after David Graeber’s death, attempts to explain the importance of his work in the three dimensions of affects, ideas and science. On the level of affects, the main quality of his work was to convey, with rare imagination and intelligence, his joyful enthusiasm for scientific knowledge and political possibilities, when too many authors in the economic and social sciences remain locked in sad passions that drive readers away. In terms of ideas, the profound rigor of his work stems from his Bhaskar-influenced epistemology, his knowledge of economic policy acquired through his friends Hudson and de Keen, his mastery of the anthropological corpus and, finally, his anarchic sensibility far removed from any theoretical hierarchical chapel. Scientifically speaking, the center of gravity of his ego and of his prolific body of hypotheses was never placed in any particular theory or ideology, but in the scientific procedure itself, which consists in creating and testing hypotheses to explore the terra incognita of our all-too-human world.
