On the Origin of the Name K‘art‘li, Pitiaxēs Ousas’ Intaglio and Karchēdoi Iberians

This article proposes a new analysis of Pitiaxēs Ousas' engraved gemstone dated from the third or fourth century CE and preserved in the glyptic collections of French National Library. The ethnonym Karchēdoi draws several interpretative hypotheses. It is in my opinion possible to find an Aramaic origin in this ethnonym which could designate the Iberians living in the citadel of Armazi and placed under the authority of the pitiaxēs governing the city.The importance of the royal capital in Caucasian Iberia could then explain a shift in the meaning of the name Karchēdoi, which came to designate the inhabitants of the country around the citadel of Armazi. The appearance of the geographical name K'art'li might perhaps find there a possible origin.

Cet article propose une nouvelle analyse de l'intaille du pitiaxe Ousas, datée du IIIe ou IVe siècle de l'ère chrétienne et conservée dans les collections glyptiques de la Bibliothèque nationale de France. L'ethnonyme Karchēdoi dégage plusieurs hypothèses d'interprétation. Il est à mon avis possible de trouver une origine araméenne à cet ethnonyme qui pourrait désigner les Ibères vivant dans la citadelle d'Armazi et placés sous l'autorité des pitiaxes gouvernant la ville. L’importance de la capitale royale en Ibérie du Caucase pourrait alors expliquer un changement de sens du nom Karchēdoi, qui en est venu à désigner les habitants du pays autour de la citadelle d’Armazi. L'apparition du nom géographique K'art'li pourrait peut-être y trouver une origine possible.
