Menée en août et en septembre 2004 par le Service archéologique du Douaisis, la fouille préventive d’une parcelle à Montigny-en-Ostrevent a révélé des vestiges protohistoriques, gallo-romains et mérovingiens. La fouille d’un puits gallo-romain a donné l’occasion d’étudiée une sandale cloutée. Des rapprochements typologiques avec des sandales exhumées dans les provinces nord-occidentales de l’Empire romain ont permis de proposer une datation aux premiers siècles de l’Empire. De consonance plus méditerranéenne que gauloise et assez rarement portée en Gaule septentrionale, la sandale est à la fois un indice de romanisation et de relative richesse de son propriétaire. Cette découverte complète les typologies fondées sur les chaussures et permet d’améliorer nos connaissances sur l’artisanat et l’habillement gallo-romains.

A Gallo-Roman Leather Sandal in Montigny-en-Ostrevent (Nord)Carried out in the months of August and September 2004 by the Douaisis Archaeological Department, the emergency excavation of a plot of land in Montigny-in-Ostrevent yielded Gallo-Roman and Merovingian protohistorical remains. The excavation of a Gallo-Roman well led to the discovery of a studded sandal. Typological comparisons with sandals discovered in the north-western provinces of the Roman Empire established that the sandal dates to the first centuries of the Empire. With its more Mediterranean than Gallic appearance, that is of a type rather seldom worn in northern Gaul, this sandal is both a sign of the romanization and of the relative wealth of its owner. This find complements existing footwear typologies and allows us to improve our knowledge of Gallo-Roman handicraft and clothing.
