Therapeutic education in veterinary medecine, a possible tailoring ? Example of canine atopic dermatitis Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is one of the main causes of consultation in veterinary dermatology : it is estimated that about 10% of dogs are more or less atopic. CAD is a chronic disease with a multifaceted treatment. It is important to mention that every dog is unique and treatment shall be tailored on a case to case basis. For humans, in case of chronic disease, therapeutic education has been shown to be interesting, first for diabetes mellitus then for allergic diseases (asthma and atopic eczema). The aim of this approach is to allow the patient to better understand his disease and allow him to be autonomous in his life. This way of managing diseases is also possible in dogs, especially in a chronic disease necessitating life-long treatments such as canine atopic dermatitis. We will discuss in this article the definition of therapeutic education in veterinary medicine, its applications in atopic dermatitis and will insist on an original concept, well documented in man, the «atopy school», which allows a better education of the owners to the therapy.

La dermatite atopique canine est un des principaux motifs de consultation en dermatologie vétérinaire : il est estimé que 10% des chiens sont, peu ou prou, atopiques. Il s’agit d’une maladie chronique, dont le traitement est multifactoriel. En outre chaque animal est unique et la thérapeutique doit être adaptée au cas par cas. Chez l’homme, pour les maladies chroniques, l’éducation thérapeutique a montré son intérêt, initialement dans le diabète puis dans les maladies allergiques (asthme et dermatite atopique). Le but de cette approche est de permettre au patient d’acquérir des compétences qui lui permettent de participer de manière autonome à sa prise en charge. Ce concept est tout à fait transposable au chien, notamment dans une maladie pérenne, qui nécessite des traitements réguliers, comme la dermatite atopique. Nous évoquerons dans cet article la définition de l’éducation thérapeutique en médecine vétérinaire, ses modes d’application dans le cadre de la dermatite atopique et insisterons sur une approche originale, validée chez l’homme, la mise en place d’une «école de l’atopie» qui permet de faciliter la formation des propriétaires aux soins.
