In his Policraticus, John of Salisbury proposes a model of virtue based on temperance and modesty which some historians have interpreted as an influence of the Aristotelian doctrine of the mean. A closer study of some notions in the Policraticus, however, reveals a filiation between the philosophical ideas developed by John and the tradition of thought of the Gregorian reformers which suggests that there could be much to learn in reconsidering the Policraticus in the light of the political and philosophical conceptions elaborated by the reformers in the century that preceded its writing.

Dans son Policraticus, Jean de Salisbury propose un modèle de vertu fondé sur la tempérance et la recherche du juste milieu dans lequel plusieurs auteurs ont vu une influence de la doctrine aristotélicienne du juste milieu. Une étude plus attentive de quelques notions développées dans le Policraticus révèle néanmoins une filiation entre les idées philosophiques développées par Jean de Salisbury et la tradition réformatrice, laissant rentrevoir tout l'intérêt qu'il pourrait y avoir à reconsidérer le Policraticus à la lumière des conceptions politiques et philosophiques élaborées en milieu réformateur dans le siècle qui a précédé sa rédaction.
