"Alcoholism and drug addiction are a matter of public health in Colombia, however, there isn’t an extensive and comprehensive study on the quality of information provided by the media about these issues, noting that these are some of the majo r agents of influence over collective conception of mental illness. Therefore, this paper seeks to establish the importance given from the Colombian press to drug and alcohol issues and to analyze the quality of their information. Through a descriptive stu dy, the contents of 357 notes on addictions (alcohol and drug), published over a year period (July 1, 2012 and June 31, 2013) in 7 Colombian newspapers were analyzed. It was found that addictions are issues that the Colombian press often highlighted, but a re often treated from a single point of view and with few sources of information, which suggests the need for training for both journalists covering these issues as for the actual sources of information."
