Kambarage Nyerere, as Julius Nyerere was called before he was baptised into the Catholic Church, was born on 13th April 1922 in the village of Butiama, near the east coast of Lake Victoria. In that area of north-west Tanzania the European presence was negligible, and from infancy he was used to doing small jobs around the shamba (smallholding) and tending to the animals.
