Excavations in several areas of Tell 'Atij were unsuccessful in locating vestiges of the dwellings for the people who would have been in charge of this third millennium grain depot in the Middle Habur valley. This leads us to question where the occupants of Tell 'Atij would have lived, and just who were they anyway? Presently we consider two principal hypotheses: 1) tell 'Atij would have been a commercial station administered by officials from a city-state to the south, Mari for example, who would have lived somewhere in the middle Habur area near tell 'Atij from where they could have controlled the ensemble of grain depots of the valley ; 2) tell 'Atij would have been a fortified storage site used by pastoral nomads – which would explain the absence of domestic dwellings – who stopped by regularly for provisions for themselves as well as their animals, during their seasonal movements through the region.

Après des fouilles infructueuses menées en différents endroits du site de tell 'Atij afin de retrouver les restes de l'habitat qu'auraient occupés les gens responsables du fonctionnement de ce dépôt à grains du IIIème millénaire situé dans la moyenne vallée du Khabour, se pose la question à savoir où demeuraient les occupants de tell 'Atij? Et, par ricochet, qui étaient-ils? À l'heure actuelle deux thèses principales s'affrontent, à savoir que: 1) tell 'Atij aurait été une sorte de station commerciale administrée par des fonctionnaires originaires d'une cité-état méridionale, comme Mari par exemple, qui auraient vécu dans un lieu voisin de tell 'Atij dans la moyenne vallée du Khabour même d'où ils auraient pu contrôler l'ensemble des dépôts à grains de la vallée; 2) tell 'Atij aurait été un entrepôt fortifié utilisé par des pasteurs nomades – ce qui expliquerait l'absence d'un habitat domestique – qui s'y arrêtaient régulièrement pour se ravitailler, ainsi que leurs troupeaux, lors de leurs déplacements saisonniers dans la région.
