The pontifical commission Ecclesia Dei was instituted by Pope John Paul II in 1988 in the wake of the episcopal consecrations without pontifical mandate perpetrated by Bishop Marcel Lefebvre and his following excommunication. However, the pontifical commission was abolished January the 17th of 2019. Its competences are now integrated to a department of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. This transformation follows an evolution started back as early as 2009 with the motu proprio Ecclesiae unitatem, but its motives comes first from theology. Theology entail minimal requirements of communion within the Church, an authorized interpretation of the Vatican II Council, the criticism of authentic magisterium in pastoral matters, the articulation between unity and diversity within the Catholic world, the culture of dialogue and the implementing of a guideline dear to Pope Francis, «unity is superior to conflict».

Ses compétences ont été intégrées à une section de la Congrégation pour la doctrine de la foi. Si ce changement prolonge une évolution entamée dès 2009 par le motu proprio Ecclesiae unitatem, il répond à des raisons qui sont essentiellement théologiques.
