Ce bref bilan fait le point sur la façon dont, depuis la publication en 1986 par J.-P. Vernant et C. Malamoud du colloque fondateur intitulé Corps des dieux, ce thème se retrouve dans les recherches et les débats des trois dernières décennies, au croisement entre l’histoire de l’art, l’histoire des religions et études littéraires. Si les questions soulevées par l’altérité et la spécificité du corps des dieux ont pu être abordées dans des perspectives très différentes, elles restent centrales pour réfléchir aussi bien au statut de l’image dans les sociétés anciennes qu’à la perception du divin.

The Bodies of Gods in the Greek and Roman World:A Survey of Historiography.This brief survey presents a synthesis of the ways in which, since the 1986 publication of J.-P. Vernant and C. Malamoud's seminal symposium entitled Corps des dieux, this theme has come up in research and debates in the past three decades, at the crossroads of art history, the history of religions, and literary studies. While issues of the differences and specificities of the bodies of gods may have been approached from highly different perspectives, they still remain crucial to reflections both on the status of images in ancient societies and on the perception of the divine.
