The concept of immune system. In fundamental and medical biology, the word "system", frequently employed, often has an ambiguous meaning. From being an anatomical system, it becomes a functional system. But in immunology, the reactions of the organism were not until recently considered as a permanent and general function. They were thought to be an oddity of nature, a succession of accidental events related to an individual history. For long only concerned with rejection, the immune system turns now to another aspect, that of facilitation. The evolutive perspective brings in another complication. The author, looking at the scene from the teacher's viewpoint, combating the traditional presentation of immunology, selects some paradoxical situations which play a polemical role.

En biologie fondamentale et médicale le terme de système, couramment employé a souvent un sens ambigu. De système anatomique il doit devenir système fonctionnel. Mais en immunologie l'ensemble des réactions n'a longtemps pas formé une fonction générale permanente de l'organisme. Il s'agissait plutôt d'une bizarrerie de la nature, une suite d'événements accidentels liés à l'histoire individuelle. Longtemps tourné uniquement vers le rejet, le système immunitaire présente désormais une deuxième face, celle de la facilitation. La perspective évolutive enfin complique encore le tableau. Pédagogiquement, pour lutter contre cette présentation de l'immunologie l'auteur propose de sélectionner des situations paradoxales jouant une fonction polémique.

Se trataba más bien de una rareza de la naturaleza, una sucesión de acontecimientos accidentales ligados a la historia individual. Durante mucho tiempo girado hacia el rechazo, el sistema inmunitario presenta desde ahora una segunda fase, la fase de la facilitación.
