In cases where one sentence embeds another, sometimes it is natural to see the embedding context as effecting a shift in the index of evaluation. A problem for this view comes from sentences where embedded predicates do not make the semantic contribution we would thereby expect them to. We review different ideas as to how these sentences arrive compositionally at their interpretation. According to one, the structure that gets interpreted is one where the troublemaking predicate is actually outside the syntactic scope of the expression that serves to shift indices. All the approaches have an important difficulty to face. That one also has to deal with a German football team.
