Between the 4th and the 6th centuries of our era the image of the fox, and more particularly that of a woman disguised as a fox, comes to be assimilated to that of a dead woman in love. Later, under the Tang dynasty, when the theme of the courtesan becomes important in literature, the vixen takes on a certain number of her characteristics, and the two become homologous. The aim of this study is to show that the three images — the dead woman in love, the vixen and the courtesan — belong to the same paradigm and are but three different ways of imagining an alternative — perceived as illusory — to the traditional system of matrimonial alliance

Entre les IVe et VIe siècles de notre ère, l'image du renard, sous les traits de la femme renarde, vient se confondre avec la morte amoureuse. Plus tard, sous les Tang, au moment où s'affirme dans la littérature lettrée le thème de la courtisane, la renarde lui emprunte un certain nombre de caractéristiques, en sorte que les deux figures deviennent homologues. Cette étude se propose de montrer que les trois figures : morte, renarde et courtisane, qui appartiennent au même ensemble paradigmatique, ne sont que trois façons d'envisager l'alternative — posée d'emblée comme illusoire — au système traditionnel de l'alliance matrimoniale
