Résumé 0

The idea of novelty is ambiguous. A: the time of the Renaissance, the “nouvelletés” did not always arouse contemporary enthusiasm. One can discover a more complicated attitude in the set of twenty pictures engraved in Italy by the famous Flemish-Italian drawer and painter Jan ven der Straet, alias Giovanni Stradano (or della Strada). This set has been entitled Nova Reperta and it is reproduced in this article. In his drawings and captions, the artist wanted to depict in great detail the most impressive inventions or discoveries of modern times and in particular the discovery of the New World. Each of these pictures is carefully analysed so as to bring out at the same time a specific and general meaning. Nevertheless, some details or words still remain a mystery to our eyes.
