Pre-service teachers should be trained and prepared to develop digital learning resources. Therefore, they need insight into the characteristics and demands of mathematics students, which personas, prototypical representatives of homogeneous student groups, can provide. The study aims to discover aspects of personas relevant to basic teacher training. We accompanied four pre-service mathematics teachers and interviewed them during one term while they were developing digital learning materials using personas. We analysed the data using grounded theory and qualitative content analysis approaches. The results indicate that the following aspects of using personas are vital for teacher education: Personas as an information tool, personas as a planning and feedback tool, triggering reflection processes through working with personas and continuity in working with personas.
