"Transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-b1) is producedby several cell lineages such as lymphocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells, and its expression serves in both autocrineand paracrine modes to control the differentiation, proliferation, and state of activation of these and other cells. In general, TGF-b1 has pleiotropic properties on the immuneresponse during the development of infection diseasesand cancer; however, the mechanisms of action and regulationof gene expression of this cytokine are poorly understood,In this review, the biological properties and themolecular mechanisms that regulate TGF-b1 gene expressionare described, to understand the role of this cytokinein growth and cell differentiation. The knowledge of molecularmechanisms of gene expression of TGF-b1 may serveto develop new cancer therapies.
