En 403 av. J.-C., les Athéniens se réconcilièrent après plusieurs mois d’une guerre civile sanglante entre oligarques et démocrates. Les deux camps s’engagèrent alors solennellement à « ne pas rappeler les maux » ( mē mnēsikakein) qui les avaient déchirés, et la démocratie fut rétablie. Selon Nicole Loraux, c’est la cité tout entière qui aurait fait le choix de l’amnistie de façon à conjurer le spectre hideux de la guerre civile ( stasis). Cet article propose de revenir sur cette interprétation unanimiste en prenant, comme point de départ, l’une des grandes figures de la réconciliation athénienne, Archinos. Résistant de la première heure à l’oligarchie, celui-ci parvint à rassembler les « modérés » des deux camps autour d’une conception partagée de la communauté et de ses limites. Loin de s’imposer comme une évidence, la réconciliation alla de pair avec le maintien d’une forte conflictualité politique, dont témoigne notamment une floraison de procès entre 403 et 399. Ces affrontements tournèrent manifestement à l’avantage des « modérés », qui non seulement parvinrent à l’emporter sur le moment, mais réussirent par la suite à imposer leur version de l’histoire, comme en témoigne la Constitution des Athéniens attribuée à Aristote. En réalité, ce ne fut nullement la cité unanime qui refoula le conflit, mais certains groupes, bien identifiables en son sein, qui promurent activement l’oubli, quitte à l’imposer avec une
