"Las camisetas de Vieques is a hybrid text that examines thepopular meaning of anti-U.S. Navy t-shirts as articulations ofancestral memory and political militancy. Designs withverbal and visual messages printed on t-shirts as popularinitiatives allow for an understanding of pro-Vieques politicalpractices by subaltern sectors as expressions and narratives ofshared and/or self identities within the complexity of thepacifist movement of civil disobedience. The study of theset-shirts as texts highlights the hybrid meanings of theseidentities by comparing the struggles of the 1970s and thoseof the new millennium. Contrary to any kind of simplifyingintent, the text suggests a move away from the orthodoxapproaches of traditional essentialist reiterations and currentacademic impositions. The result is risky but stimulating."
