"Objective. To determine the prevalence of upper respiratorytract colonization by Moraxella catarrhalis in childrenunder six years of age. Material and methods. A surveywas conducted between January and December 1998 inMexico City, among children aged 2 months to 5 years, selectedthrough cluster sampling. Pharyngeal samples weretaken for M. catarrhalis identification. The minimal inhibitoryconcentration to different antibiotics was obtained and betalactamaseswere determined by the iodometric test. Statisticalanalysis consisted of frequency distributions, oddsratios, 95% confidence intervals, and Mantel-Haenszel c2 .Statistical significance was set at p
