The libraries of the writers allow to observe the genesis of the writing process. They are the "interface of the writing" with its cultural context: an intellectual context, structured through the dialogue with the writers of the past; and a material context in which the literary works arise. This paper is dedicated to a significant case study, the first library of Vittorio Alfieri (confiscated in Paris in 1792 and then dispersed). After a methodological framing on the specificity of the library as an object of the textual criticism, we will use some case studies (Dante, Ossian, Petrarca, Machiavelli) to retrace how Alfieri appropriates his readings and re-elaborates them in the genetic process. We will show how dialogue between the library of writers and the literary archive often constitutes an important element of the “genetic dossier” of his works.
