Is research on the key-word “beautiful” still meaningful in the field of architectural theory, if we face more pressing issues in our times of ecological, social and political crisis, and inquiries on the terms “sustainability” and “inclusiveness” seem to be more relevant?Through a digression into the history of the aesthetic theories on architecture, the most diverse efforts to define the concept of beauty are analyzed to highlight the aspects of the term that are still significant and up-to-date.Above all, underlining that the search for beauty is also a matter of ethical value in design, not limited to ephemeral aesthetic issues, the essay reflects on the fundamental contribution that seeking beauty can still make in redefining the role of architecture in an era of uncertainty.
