Prononcer une homélie est un acte pastoral et liturgique porteur d’enseignement et de valeurs. Mais c’est aussi un acte de langage. À cet égard, la préparation d’une homélie exige la mise en œuvre d’une compétence rhétorique attentive aux particularités de cette situation de communication. C’est bien cette dimension proprement langagière que le présent article, en complémentarité avec les autres contributions de ce numéro, veut aborder spécifiquement.

The homiletic discourse is shaped both by the specific constraints tied to the genre to which it belongs, and by the ever-changing conditions of communication. This article offers some rhetorical tools which may help the preacher respond to the twofold requirement of adapting to the requisite forms and of creative elaboration. A few contributions from contemporary linguistics are thus placed at the service of the declarative and compositional aspects of the homily. A working method is thus proposed: a process of embedding that helps ensure that the discourse is coherent while at the same time opening the text up to a diversity of textual sequences and speech acts. The article closes with the text of a homily intended to illustrate this method.
