Despite her considerable literary production, translator, critic and essayist Elisabeth de Roos (1903-1981) has fallen into oblivion. Even before the literary journal Forum was founded, De Roos had already paid attention to the binary opposition esthetics/content of a literary work, resolutely opting for writers with character. By analyzing an essay on Stendhal (1948), I try to reconstruct her translation strategy for La Chartreuse de Parme. The reception of the retranslation by Theo Kars (2003) shows us that cultural translation norms have changed, but this doesn’t imply that we can dismiss De Roos‘ work as “outdated”.
