With the advance of capitalism, a sudden scientific and philosophical interest in the phenomenon of work appeared. Understood as the human capacity to transform natural materials, some thinkers came to elevate it to the status of the essence of humanity and to identify it with freedom itself, to the point of turning the proletariat into the "general representative" of modern capitalist societies. This talk aims to explore why this idea appeared and why it was put into crisis during the 20th century.

Con el avance del capitalismo, apareció un súbito interés científico y filosófico por el fenómeno del trabajo. Entendido como la capacidad humana de transformar las materias naturales, algunos pensadores llegaron a elevarlo al estatuto de esencia de la humanidad y a identificarlo con la propia libertad, hasta el punto de convertir el proletariado en el "representante general" de las sociedades capitalistas modernas. Esta charla se propone explorar por qué apareció esta idea y por qué se puso en crisis durante el siglo XX.
