The cave of the Baume in Gigny is situated on the western side of the Jura range. The karstic network develops on the western limb of the high valley of river Suran in the bioclastic limestones of the Upper Jurassic. Its large fossiliferous filling has been dug at several times from the end of the XVIIIth century, but it is only for the last fifteen years that this cave has been recognized as a very important mousterian site.

La grotte de La Baume à Gigny est située dans son contexte géographique et géologique. Site préhistorique reconnu dès la fin du XVIIIe siècle, les diverses recherches dont elle a été l'objet sont évoquées dans ce chapitre.
