If Bodin's definition of sovereignty, Grotius' conception of international law and Hobbes' theory of the state still define the horizon of political philosophy today, they also owe it to the fact that their authors have been able to interpret, reflect on and modify concepts invented and transformed by jurists and theologians since Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Law and theology, which are not considered here from a dogmatic point of view, have thus constituted a formidable laboratory of ideas for the political theorists of modernity. This volume, which can also be read as an introduction to modern political thought, is devoted to the exploration of this laboratory of ideas.
