Dans le chapitre II d’Under the Volcano, qui est celui des retrouvailles du Consul et d’Yvonne, son ex-épouse, deux images orientent le texte vers la dissociation et la désunion. Dans la vitrine d’une imprimerie, Yvonne contemple son reflet, mais ce qu’elle re-voit est en fait une projection mentale d’un moi antérieur. L’agrandissement photographique d’un roc en désagrégation, qui surplombe le reflet dans la vitrine, devient à son tour la cruelle métaphore visuelle de l’inéluctable fracture du couple.Cet article propose d’étudier comment ces images de nature différente métaphorisent isolément et de concert la dissociation du moi et la rupture du couple.

In Chapter II of Under the Volcano, where the Consul and Yvonne, his ex-wife, are reunited, two images undermine a potentially optimistic interpretation of the situation and herald dissociation and separation. In a printer’s shop-window Yvonne sees her own reflection, but what she contemplates in her mind’s eye is the mental projection of a former, recollected self. The photographic enlargement of a disintegrating rock, overhanging as it were the reflection in the window, comes to be seen as the cruel metaphor of the couple’s unavoidable disintegration.This article examines how these ontologically different images function as isolated and conjugated metaphors of the severance of the self and of the couple.
