Grande Sertão : Veredas a pour toile de fond un régionalisme que Guimarães Rosa invitait à dépasser en suggérant une double voie : l’alchimie d’Occident, le taoïsme associé au bouddhisme-Zen d’Orient. The backdrop of The Devil to Pay in the Backlands is a regionalism that Guimarães Rosa induces to excess by suggesting a double path : the alchemy of theWest and theTaoism associated with Zen Buddhism of the East.The analysis of the role of certain animals on this double path is organized in three parts : the birds of Rio-das-Velhas, where the substrate indicates Hermetism, Taoism, and yoga ; the fazenda of theTucanos,where the Egyptian Serapeum of Memphis lives again on the banks of the São Francisco River ; and the evocation of the nuptial flight of ants, a practical lesson in alchemy.The demonstration is based on the writer’s linguistic creativity.

A análise da função desempenhada por certos animais organiza-se assim em torno de três unidades potenciadas pela criatividade do escritor : os pássaros do Rio-das-Velhas cujo substrato imaginário aponta para o Hermetismo ; a fazenda dos Tucanos onde o Serapion egípcio de Mênfis renasce nas margens do Rio São Francisco ; a evocação de um vôo nupcial de formigas enquanto lição aplicada de alquimia.
