The Configuration of the universe : A book by al-Ḥasan ibn al-Haytham ?

Les historiens de l’astronomie médiévale – au moins depuis Pierre Duhem – s’accordent sur le fait que La Configuration de l’univers – traduite de l’arabe en hébreu puis en latin – est un livre du xie siècle d’Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen). Ils voient dans cette œuvre une synthèse de l’ Almageste et de la cosmologie aristotélienne. Certains historiens de l’optique sont allés plus loin et ont essayé d’expliquer sa réforme de l’optique par une semblable synthèse. Cet article a pour objet de prouver que La Configuration de l’univers n’est pas un livre d’Ibn al-Haytham et que ce mathématicien avait une conception totalement différente de la cinématique céleste.

Historians of medieval astronomy – at least from Pierre Duhem on – have agreed that The Configuration of the universe – translated from Arabic into Hebrew and into Latin – was a book of the 11th century Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen). They have seen in this contribution a synthesis of Almagest with Aristotelian cosmology. Some historians of optics went a step further and tried to explain his optical reform by a similar synthesis. This paper is devoted to prove that The Configuration of the universe is not a book of Ibn al-Haytham, and that the mathematician had a completely different conception of celestial kinematics.
