L’abord de la famille des sujets schizophrènes s’est profondément modifié en un siècle, parallèlement à l’évolution des modèles s’efforçant de comprendre la pathogénie des schizophrénies. Une conception volontiers déterministe et causaliste de la « famille pathogène », voire de la « mère schizophrénogène », longtemps en vogue, si elle a pu favoriser l’émergence de paradigmes novateurs comme la perspective systémique, s’est avérée non seulement stigmatisante mais sans fondement scientifique. En connexion étroite avec le développement de modèles multifactoriels d’explication des troubles, l’alliance avec les familles s’est imposée pour améliorer l’efficacité thérapeutique. La prise en compte de l’expérience difficile des parents a contribué à l’émergence de nouveaux dispositifs de soutien des personnes affectées de schizophrénie. Au-delà de la psycho-éducation, l’appui sur les ressources des familles et leur empowerment (restauration du pouvoir d’agir) peut s’inscrire aujourd’hui dans le cadre des dynamiques d’accompagnement orientées vers le rétablissement ( recovery) et l’inclusion sociale des personnes schizophrènes.

The regard on the families of the persons with a schizophrenia : Historical aspects and perspectivesThe vision of the schizophrenic’s family has considerably evolved during a century, in parallel with the evolution of the models trying to understand the pathogeny of schizophrenia. The first prevailing causal notions of “schizophrenogenic mother” or “pathogenic families” has boosted the emergence of ground-breaking paradigms like the systemic point of view but finally were proved to be stigmatizing and without any scientific basis. In strong connexion with the development of plurifactorial explanatory models of the disorders, the alliance with the families has become a requirement to improve the therapeutic efficiency. Taking into account the distressing life of the parents has contributed to the raising of new frameworks of family support to the persons with a schizophrenia. Beyond the psychoeducation, to lean on the resources and the empowerment of the families is today integrated into the dynamics of cure and care that are oriented towards the recovery and the social inclusion of the persons with a schizophrenia.
