Résumé En

In the first half of this paper in honour of Charles Travis, I argue that the Contextualist Principle, according to which a sentence has content only in the context of a speech act, is still is a live option (contrary to widespread belief that it has been refuted). In the second half, I interpret Donnellan’s theory of reference as a case for contextualism, and I defend it against a widespread objection, by incorporating the speaker’s reference/semantic reference distinction into Donnellan's framework.
