Résumé 0

The growing presence of “service jobs” is a major component of the new economy. It has been a factor in weakening the traditional labor movement and the major social and political institutions which benefit workers, rooted as they were in basic industry. Can service jobs today be considered the saving grace of union revival ? First we need to define these very diverse employment situations, what are incorrectly referred to as a “sector”. Do these workers, often women, ethnic minorities, immigrants, bring with them new strategies in organizing ? Finally, we’ll look at how this all plays out as a background for the recent split in the U.S. labor movement.
