The History of the Herem and its Decline in Ancien Regime FranceThe Herem or ban of excommunication was the most powerful and dreaded weapon the medieval Jewish community could use to maintain authority among its members. It was quite prevalent in the kingdom of France during the 18th century, when it suddenly disappeared in the wake of the Revolution. The present study is an attempt to explain the reasons for this radical change.
