Résumé 0

This article presents the history and composition of a painting by Robert Delétang (1874–1951) produced in the internment camp of Poitiers in 1942. The background of the painter, who was close to anti-Semitic movements and the author of numerous works depicting Gitanos (“Gypsies”) in Spain and France, enables us to understand the sources of this work depicting Jews and so-called nomads in a French camp during the Occupation. The unedited testimony of Eugénie Duville (1926–2021), interned in Poitiers, provides a unique oral source from which to reconstruct the conditions under which the painter worked in the camp and used models chosen from among the camp’s inmates.
