Seen from France, there is a lack of knowledge concerning the French people living abroad, though France has always been a land of immigration. If this rather mixed population is not very important compared to the number of the French resident in France, (Three French persons living abroad out of a hundred residents) however it represents two million people. Who are thoe French nationals temporarily reisdent abroad? The article tries to answer this question, first drawing from the available sources, then by analysing the characteristics of geographical distribution and concentration of this population, as well as the development of their number and the social-demographic distribution (sex, age, social category, dual nationality)

Les Français résidant à l'étranger sont méconnus en France, pays pluriséculaire d'immigration. Si cette population assez hétérogène est marginale en nombre par rapport à la population résidente en France (un peu plus de 3 Français à l'étranger pour 100 résidents), elle représente tout de même en valeur absolue près de 2 millions de personnes. Qui sont ces personnes porteurs de la nationalité française et n'habitant (temporairement) pas en France ? L'article tente de répondre à la question en discutant tout d'abord les sources disponibles puis en analysant les caractéristiques de répartitions et de concentration géographiques , d'évolution numérique et de distributions sociodémographiques (sexe, âge, CS, binationalité).
