Résumé 0

"This paper analyzes how students write academic essays by crossing discursi- vely between home and academic cultures. Relying on ethnographic research and close readings of student texts, this paper argues that students can travel from ‘outside’ to ‘inside’ the conventions of analytic writing by cultivating an ironic awareness, a critical knowledge of how to engage diverse subject matter and multiple readers. Faculty must also develop a humble irony that honors the hybrid expressions that students compose, and faculty must be able to articulate the discursive features and values of academic writing, as we work with students on the borderlands of academic and home cultures."
