Résumé En

We analyse Spanish secondary school pupils’ building and reading capacity of cumulative frequency tables with 128 students in the 3rd grade of secondary school (14-16 years old). Content analysis of their responses showed that most participants did not complete the cumulative frequencies or completed them incorrectly. Questions such as identifying the mode or reading a cumulative frequency were also very hard for the students. We take from the Ontosemiotic Approach the idea of semiotic conflict to describe the errors in the pupils' answers, that included misinterpreting the table structure, confusing different types of frequencies, and computational conflicts.
