Between 1700 and 1702, Tournefort, a botanist, was sent to the Levant on a royal mission. The purpose of the expedition was to check and fill in some knowledge gaps in various fields such as botany, antiques, geography, as well as the peoples’ customs, their religion, their history, their resources, and their economic or political systems. A book was written during this journey : Relation d'un voyage du Levant (1717, posthumous).Because there was such a variety of goals, this was not a mere scientific report, but it targeted a cultivated audience, outside of the scientific world. The use of the epistolary genre helped to increase the literary dimension of the volume – but the work remained non-fictional to avoid interfering with the seriousness of the observations. Thanks to this means of communication, the writer-narrator lost a bit of his scientist side and became a likable character who had to deal with what happened to him. Therefore, he got closer to the readers, with whom he tried to create complicity.

Entre 1700 et 1702, le botaniste Tournefort est envoyé sur ordre du roi pour une mission au Levant : chargée de vérifier et compléter des connaissances dans des domaines aussi variés que la botanique, les antiquités, la géographie des lieux, les mœurs des populations, leur religion, leur histoire, leurs ressources, leur économie ou leur gouvernement, l’expédition donne lieu à un ouvrage, la Relation du voyage du Levant… (1717, posthume). Une telle diversité d’objectifs entraîne un livre qui ne se limite pas à un simple rapport scientifique mais vise un public cultivé, élargi par rapport à l’univers savant. Le choix d’un dispositif épistolaire a contribué à accroître la littérarité du contenu savant du volume, sans verser dans une fiction peu compatible avec le sérieux des observations. Cette configuration énonciative met en scène un émetteur-narrateur qui perd un peu de son aura de savant pour se muer en personnage plaisant dans sa confrontation à l’action : il devient ainsi plus proche des lecteurs avec lesquels l’auteur a cherché à créer diversement une relation de connivence.
