For the Ethiopians in Heliodorus, the ambiguity of the relationship between men and gods ends with unexpected consequences. Describing a divine judgement that is falsified from the outset, and showing how men use gods for deceptive purposes, the novelist indulges in a subtle literary game, sewing doubts in the mind of his reader about the foundations of his own novel.

Chez les Éthiopiens d’Héliodore, l’ambiguïté qui caractérise les relations entre hommes et dieux débouche sur des conséquences inattendues. En décrivant un jugement divin faussé dès le départ, et en montrant comment les hommes utilisent les dieux à des fins mensongères, le romancier se livre à un jeu littéraire subtil, semant dans l’esprit de son lecteur des doutes sur les fondements de son propre roman.
