For several years, we have been conducting anthropological and psycho-social research on profane theories regarding the digestive body.Alongside our clinical observations, this research has provided us with material for discussing the paradigm of the incorporation and interdependence between bodiliness and body representation activity. Within this theoretical framwork, we analyse the mechanisms involved in the disturbances of body image and the representative capacity in subjects suffering from eating disorders (especially anorexia nervosa), while linking these dysharmonies to the failure of socio-cultural elements and social mediations regarding the construction of a relation to food.
