Cette perspective thématique engage une pluralité de directions de pensée qu’il convient tout d’abord d’identifier : les Mères, au pluriel, se déclinent en majuscule où transparaît la toute-puissance archaïque. Tel est ici mon propos d’introduire certains axes : je distinguerai cette coexistence éminemment sous tension du être mère et être femme, cette problématique inscrite au sein d’une transmission reposant sur des éléments de nature hétérogène (fantasmatique et mythique, individuel et collectif), l’hypothèse d’une dualité à l’œuvre qui renvoie à une ambivalence originaire ou à un au-delà de l’ambivalence qui signe sa défaite et interroge sur la pulsion de destruction.

My starting point in this paper is Motherhood in all its multiple aspects, at the heart of which we can half-perceive the archaic image of the All-Powerful Mother of our infancy. I will then more particularly examine the way in which the powerful tension between the fact of being a mother and that of being a woman is generated, expressed and transmitted via individual and collective myths and unconscious fantasies. I suggest that there is an inherently dual process in action in which the opposing forces of the sexual instincts and the self-preserving ego instincts are constantly interacting, necessitating a never completed working through of loss. Where containment fails and the destructive drives prevail, there is a miscarriage of ambivalence leading to a breach between love and hate.
