Solutrean origin, 40 Years after PH. Smith’s book. Highly localized in southwest Europe, the Solutrean “interrupts ” the rhythm of regional traditions. African industries, also concentrated (in the northwestern part of the continent), apparently become less visible during an arid episode, on both coasts of Gibraltar. These contacts are clearer on the Spanish coast (Parpalló) than on the French side (Rhône). However, the “Proto-Solutrean ” seems rather to be linked to traditions of the northern Gravettian (Maisières type) with large pointed blades (Cirque de la Patrie). In France, these two original components first remained separate and were given two different names (“Middle Solutrean ” and “Proto-Solutrean”). Art and technology reunite them in a sort of cultural symbiosis that is exclusively western. These value systems, however, rapidly collapsed with the appearance of the Badegoulian and the Ibero-Maurusian. Nevertheless, history of research has fatally accentuated the differences, largely obliterating evidence of origins, both in Africa and in Europe.

Très limitée au sud-ouest européen, la culture solutréenne “ interrompt ” le rythme des traditions régionales. Les industries africaines, également concentrées (nord-ouest du continent), s’estompent apparemment lors de l’épisode aride, des deux côtés de Gibraltar. Ces contacts sont plus nets du côté espagnol (Parpallô) que du côté français (Rhône). Cependant, le “ Proto-Solutréen ” semble plutôt lié aux traditions du Gravettien septentrional (type Maisières) aux grandes lames appointées (Cirque de la Patrie). En France, ces deux composantes originelles restent d’abord séparées, elles y portent d’ailleurs des dénominations différentes (“ Solutréen moyen ” et “ Proto-Solutréen ”). L’art et les techniques les réuniront en une sorte de symbiose culturelle originale, exclusivement occidentale. Ces systèmes de valeurs s’effondreront pourtant rapidement avec le Badegoulien ou l’Ibéro-Maurusien. Toutefois, l’histoire de la recherche a fatalement accentué les différences, en oblitérant largement les traces d’émergence, tant en Afrique qu’en Europe.
