Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto realizes a conceptual photography questioning the “present instant” as a “photographic instant”. In the Seascapes series, Sugimoto travels around the world to photograph the seas in black and white, as a metaphor of original landscape and infinite future. Photographs exemplify the impermanence of the universe rhythms and the passage of time; which makes it possible to perceive eternity in the present “instant”. The use of photography serves as a ritual framework for a meditative approach to the real, where smooth surface invites to emptiness and silence. Because of these seascapes are opposing to the overflow of images that our globalized society produces in an acceleration and de-materialization, the black and white image gives a way to emptiness, and requires to be contemplated; to better appreciate the “instant” by concentrating on the essential of an “eternal contemporary”.

L’artiste japonais Hiroshi Sugimoto construit une photographie conceptuelle interrogeant l’instant présent comme instant photographique. Dans la série Seascapes, Sugimoto réalise des images monochromes, où les mers du monde entier se révèlent dans la métaphore d’un paysage originel et d’un futur infini. Les photographies documentent ainsi l’impermanence des rythmes de l’univers et du passage du temps, permettant de percevoir l’éternité dans l’instant présent. L’acte photographique sert de cadre rituel à une approche méditative du réel, où la surface lisse invite au vide et au silence.
