Sur la table de chevet du peintre Georges Rouault demeurait le livre des Pensées. Une exploration patiente et attentive de l’univers de Rouault ne tarde pas à révéler sa frappante proximité avec l’univers de Pascal, et particulièrement de ses Pensées. Chez les deux, on trouve une même éthique qui dénonce l’empire de la cupidité pour ouvrir au règne de la charité. Très voisine apparaît leur esthétique qui, à un art du factice, du divertissement, préfère un art de la recherche d’absolu, un art sobre, émouvant, témoignant. À la suite du penseur, le peintre met au centre de son œuvre aussi bien l’homme que le Christ, son Visage. Dans l’anthropologie de Rouault comme dans celle de Pascal, le cœur occupe la place décisive. Dans leur christologie, la Croix est l’axe autour duquel tout gravite. Nourri de la Bible, Rouault est un peintre-exégète tout comme Pascal était un penseur-exégète.Pascal pense l’homme, Rouault peint l’homme, cet homme misérable et grand, qui erre sur la terre, guettant les traces de son vrai lieu.

A patient and careful exploration of Rouault’s universe soon reveals its striking proximity to Pascal’s, namely his Thoughts. The same ethics can be found in both, denouncing the rule of greed and calling for a realm of charity. Their esthetics converge as well in their idea of art as a search for an absolute rather than art as artifice or pleasure. Both favour a form of art that is restrained, moving and bears testimony. Emulating the thinker, the painter places man and Christ at the core of his work. Every man’s face is an image of Christ. In Rouault’s as well as Pascal’s anthropology, the human heart holds a crucial place. In their Christology, the cross is the axis around which everything gravitates. Nurtured with the Bible, Rouault is an exegete-artist just as Pascal was and exegete-thinker.Pascal thinks man ; Rouault paints man ; a creature at once wretched and sublime wandering the earth seeking insights into his true dwelling place.
