How does the word perform in biblical narrative? What reading strategies does it call for? These questions will be explored in view of catechetical work whose target is not the text but the believer. The inner workings of God’s Word in biblical narratives call for an active reading, well beyond established reading practices. It can first be seen in characteristics unveiled by historical criticism: the text is contextualized word, always speaking from a particular and limited perspective, and intertextually linked. Next, narrative criticism will lead us to three basic realities of story: everything is significant, it offers narrative identities, and it aims at building the reader.
